It’s not an infection – there is a tube in her nose that goes to her stomach. Apparently it is causing some irritation, and that is making her vomit. It should be able to be removed on Saturday.
She had her catheter removed last night, walked to the loo this morning and is feeling good.
We’ve had a meeting with her specialist. He had the results of the biopsies and recommendations for the future.
It turns out that chemotherapy IS an option… we had been so afraid they would say there was nothing further they could do.
The likelihood of chemo curing her cancer is very slim, but it may give her some more time – if it goes well, maybe up to 3 years – if not, it will be just months.
We are chasing a miracle for her – we know that. But they happen sometimes, and she is overdue one.
I’ve been madly googling – trying to find ways to maximize the good effects of chemo, and minimize the side-effects. Turns out a ketogenic (VERY low carbohydrate) diet (which is what we were doing before the diagnosis) is the way to go.
And odd side-effect of that diet is it seems to promote a sense of ‘calm’ – almost a detachment. I’ve read it described as ‘Vulcan’ – (after Mr Spock from Star Trek). Sue has it, and I find I do too – mostly. I ate some extra carbs at the weekend – and had a miserable, weepy day on Monday. I’ve gone back to the diet and am feeling much calmer. I think it might be the source of my ability to be the ‘family rock’.
Once again – thank you all for your support and encouragement. It is hugely appreciated.
this is SO good to hear!
don’t forget probiotics to aid in nutrient absorption
I keep forgetting the probiotic (cause it’s tucked away in the fridge)… smack around the side of the head… doh!
How is that baby growing? XO
Very good news. And I am totally in agreement re the diet. XXXX
I’m so glad to read this update, Janet. And glad Sue has some options now. Continuing to send Light and purrs!
P.S. Maybe my neighbour needs a very low carb diet, maybe it would help her mental health.
LAUGHING! XO
How wonderful to have a sister like you. I have just adopted you to be mine. Is that ok?
DONE! XO
Janet – that is wonderful news! What a beautiful sister you are! Your family is so lucky to have you.
That is fascinating about the diet. It makes me think that O blood types would do very well on this diet. “A ” blood types are supposed to have more carbs than other blood types…however, I think I want to look into this diet further. It never ceases to amaze me how much food plays such a huge role in our lives.
So glad to hear there are some options for your sister! 🙂
XO
That there is no infection is huge news! I’m so happy for you guys. Not to mention just being able to get up and go to the bathroom by herself- another huge step forward.
Now I’m” gonna stick my oar in your pond” as my dad used to say: I heard about something the other day http://www.emearth.com/NewFiles/ProdctHomeGardn.htmlThis stuff was designed for the garden; however my friend has been taking it for 2 years and has not had so much as a sniffle. She took it to her doc and he OK’d it. I know it won;t cure her; but perhaps it might keep her from getting an infection.
Also, are their any clinical trials around there she can get into? Houston has one of the biggest medical centers anywhere with M.D. Anderson here, the #1 cancer hospital in the US. Is there anyway you want me to look into any of them for her? I know we’re half a world away; but I just thought I’d ask, just in case.
Michele – that link doesn’t work, but I went to the emearth website… is it the Xtra Immunity product your friend is using? I see it contains kelp (among other ingredients) which is something I saw mentioned several times in my research… I don’t know about clinical trials – never occurred to me to ask – I WILL now! Thank you so much XXXOOO
I think she is using the the plain EM1. I’d call or email the company directly and see talk to one of their chemists. It couldn’t hurt.:)
I will Michele, thanks XO
Hi Janet – just catching up with your terrible news. I can relate to most of this but through my mother’s cancer and my best friend’s cancer. It is a terribly hard journey through illness and takes a terrible toll on everyone involved. xx
